YouTube Tries on the Role of a Chat Once Again: Google Introduces a New Communication Approach

Google is once again attempting to expand YouTube beyond video consumption by transforming it into a full communication platform. The company has launched a new experiment that allows users to exchange videos and chat directly inside the mobile app. According to DataReportal, over 3.5 billion people use YouTube monthly, and more than 70% of all watch time comes from mobile devices. This makes the platform one of the most promising channels for integrating social interaction tools at scale.

Google previously tried implementing built-in direct messages in YouTube back in 2017, but the feature was shut down two years later due to low global adoption. However, user behavior has changed dramatically since then. Internal Google analytics show a 40% growth in shared YouTube links across messaging apps over the past three years. This trend indicates an increasing demand for seamless content-driven communication.

The updated mechanics allow users to send each other any type of media — long-form videos, Shorts, and live streams — and discuss them inside a dedicated chat thread. A new "Messages" tab is appearing in the interface, while sharing content works through the standard “Share” menu. This turns YouTube into a hybrid space where viewing, discussion, and curation happen without leaving the app.

Users can invite new participants via a simple link, which significantly reduces friction and makes group conversations more organic. Built-in dialogues offer the ability to delete message history and block unwanted contacts. At the same time, YouTube notes that all messages may be automatically moderated, as algorithms scan for potential violations. Transparency reports from Google highlight that the platform flags over 1 billion pieces of content annually across all services, underscoring the scale of automated monitoring.

Currently, the feature is being tested by limited groups of users aged 18+ in Poland and Ireland. Early feedback will determine whether the product scales globally. If successful, YouTube may evolve into a powerful communication ecosystem, merging content sharing, social engagement, and real-time discussion.
