OpenAI Plans to Launch Its Own Social Network
Table of Contents:
A Response to the Bot Crisis
OpenAI is reportedly working on launching its own social network designed to fundamentally address one of the biggest problems of modern platforms — the dominance of bots. According to available information, the project is currently at an early development stage and is being handled by a small internal team of fewer than 10 people. Despite its limited scale at this stage, the strategic ambition of the initiative is significant.
Bots have become a structural threat to online ecosystems. Independent studies estimate that between 5% and 15% of accounts on major social networks are automated or fake, while during election cycles or geopolitical crises this number can exceed 20%. Cybersecurity firms report that billions of automated interactions are generated every month, many of them powered by large language models. This artificial activity distorts engagement metrics, amplifies misinformation, and undermines user trust.
Identity-Based Verification as a Core Principle
To counter this, OpenAI is reportedly exploring strong identity verification mechanisms. One option is Face ID authentication on iPhones. Another is Orb — a biometric device developed by World, a project also associated with Sam Altman. Orb scans the human iris to confirm uniqueness and create a persistent digital identity. Such a system could become a foundational layer not only for a social network, but for other digital services as well.
This approach reflects a broader industry shift toward identity-first architectures, where real human presence becomes the basis of trust and interaction.
AI-Native Content and the Paradox of Automation
The platform may also include built-in AI tools for content creation, including video generation technologies similar to those demonstrated in Sora. Analysts project that by 2030 more than 50% of online content could be generated or heavily assisted by AI. At the same time, critics point out the inherent paradox: tools like ChatGPT played a role in accelerating large-scale automation across the internet.
If OpenAI succeeds in combining AI creativity with strict human verification, it could introduce a new model of social platforms — one built around authenticity rather than reach.
