Bluesky Reaches 40 Million Users and Prepares to Launch Dislike Feature
Bluesky, the decentralized social network originally created as an alternative to X (formerly Twitter), has officially surpassed 40 million registered users. According to data from Appfigures, the platform’s audience grew by over 900% during 2024, jumping from 2.89 million to nearly 26 million active users, and continuing its expansion through 2025.
Now, Bluesky is preparing to roll out a “dislike” feature, designed not for hostility, but for improving content personalization. When users mark posts they dislike, the system will learn which topics or tones they prefer to avoid. This data will influence both content ranking and the visibility of replies, making the feed more tailored to each individual.
The company states that the update aims to make Bluesky a more “fun, honest, and respectful” environment. Despite being decentralized, many users have criticized its moderation policies, demanding stronger intervention against harmful or controversial content. Instead, Bluesky is focusing on empowering its community — providing users with advanced moderation tools such as block lists, muted words, content filters, and independent moderation services.
In addition to dislikes, the company is experimenting with new design elements and ranking models to enhance interaction. One upcoming feature, “social neighborhoods,” will visualize user connections and prioritize replies from people closer to one’s circle of engagement.
Bluesky’s rapid growth highlights the rising demand for decentralized communication. While global social media usage increased by only 5.6% in 2024, Bluesky’s 9x user growth marks one of the fastest expansions in the digital space this decade.
