X on iOS Launches Beta Test of Standalone X Chat App

X (Twitter) has officially begun beta testing a separate iOS application for its private messaging service, X Chat. This development signals a strategic shift away from the earlier vision of an all-in-one “super app,” where messaging, payments, and social networking would coexist in a single environment. The launch of a dedicated messaging product suggests a renewed focus on specialization rather than consolidation.

Rapid Beta Expansion

According to xAI product designer Michael Boswell, access was initially granted to 1,000 testers via Apple’s TestFlight platform. The limit was reached in less than two hours, prompting an expansion to 5,000 participants. This rapid adoption reflects strong demand for focused messaging solutions.

Globally, more than 3 billion people use messaging apps, and research indicates users spend up to 40% more time in standalone messaging applications compared to built-in social media chats. The data reinforces the strategic logic behind separating X Chat from the main platform.

Interface, Branding and User Experience

Early testers have shared screenshots showing the name styled as “xChat”, possibly hinting at a soft rebranding. The login screen features a dark, space-inspired design consistent with X’s visual identity. Users describe the interface as simpler, smoother, and more intuitive than the messaging function inside the primary X app.

Security and Encryption Questions

The company positions X Chat as an encrypted messaging service. However, previous cybersecurity assessments suggested that its encryption framework did not reach the level of fully end-to-end encrypted platforms like Signal. Industry surveys show that 82% of users consider end-to-end encryption a decisive factor when choosing a messaging service. It remains unclear whether the updated version addresses earlier concerns.

Upcoming Features and Ecosystem Integration

The current beta lacks message request filtering, though developers confirmed it is being redesigned. Planned updates include verification badges, voice and video calls, and deeper synchronization. Chats already sync with the main X app and the web interface launched in December 2025. The iOS age rating is 17+, matching the primary app. An Android release is expected soon.
